NOLF 2 | Game Info | Chris Miller Interview

Chris Miller (CM), Producer – Fox Interactive
Part Two - Multiplayer

Published ~ September 26, 2002

As promised in the CM - Part One interview, here is Part Two. And if you ask me... this one is better!

~ Will there be AM and DM or some sort of MP aspect so that we can play "real" people instead of AI?
Yes. While we are really excited about the cooperative multiplay included with the shipping game, we want to do our best to provide the existing fan base with what they want as well. Therefore, we've put together a plan to create new Deathmatch and Team-based maps over the next few months, although this support will not be included initially with the shipping game. The team-based maps will most likely be similar to NOLF1, with objectives based around team infiltration and team goals that would need to be achieved. We’ll do our best to address criticisms of the original modes wherever possible. We also plan to release a stand-alone server as well as the engine code and tools.

What new features SP and MP does it bring to the table?
The single player game has a new skill points system that allows each player to modify the way they play.  Skill points are earned by completing objectives and secondary objectives.  We've added searchable objects, new weapons, new gadgets and the ability to move bodies.  As for Multi-player we've taken the Co-op approach and created a mode that coincides with the single player missions. It's great that what you do in Co-op is key to fully experiencing the story.

~ Are we going to be able to create our own maps for co-op?
~ Absolutely. After the tools are released.

~ Is making maps going to be harder?
~ I wouldn’t say that creating maps will be any harder or easier, just different. The engine systems have been significantly changed which means level creation is substantially different and supports much more detail. However, the team has put a great deal of work into improving the tools at the same time to make them as easy to use as possible.

Will the interface include options to ban people, a simpler way of matching IP addresses with players names, and a logging feature so that you can tell who has played on your server?
~ We haven’t decided any of the specifics yet.

~ What kind of co-op mission can we expect to play?
~ I can tell you they tie into the single player story, and more information on co-op will follow.

~ Will admins have to again use vnc to teleportal to our host machines in order to launch and control a MP-NOLF game on in a Windows only environment?
See above, server options are being worked on.

~ How much harder will the Co-op mode be than the single player mode?
~ The coop is scaleable, set by the server.

~ Will the difficulty be relative to the number of players on the server?
~ Yes.

~   Will it be mod friendly (i.e. automatic downloading of maps/mods from the server).
~ See above, tools are being discussed.
